About
duply is a frontend for the mighty duplicity magic. duplicity is a python based shell application that makes encrypted incremental backups to remote storages. Different backends like ftp, sftp, imap, s3 and others are supported. See duplicity manpage for a complete list of backends and features.

duply simplifies running duplicity with cron or on command line by:
* keeping recurring settings in profiles per backup job
* automated import/export of keys between profile and keyring
* enabling batch operations eg. backup_verify_purge
* executing pre/post scripts
* precondition checking for flawless duplicity operation
Since version 1.5.0 all duplicity backends are supported. Hence the name changed from ftplicity to duply.

History (from ftplicity to duply)
In 2006 the german computer magazine c't released the tool ftplicity under GPL2. It was a convenience shell front end for encrypted ftp backups with the python based backup tool duplicity. Shortly after major changes in duplicity broke the software and several parties released fixes on their private websites. duply still called ftplicity started out as one of them.

The latest version of c't ftplicity 1.2 (21.10.2009) can be found on heise.de.

But soon further functionality found it's way into the patch and because the maintenance of the original author was sparsely the project ftplicity on sourceforge was created. The idea was to spread the word and find contributors in order to maintain and enhance ftplicity further.

Since then ftplicity underwent further improvement until in version 1.5 the limitation to the file transfer protocol as only backend was removed. Because of this the project was renamed to a more generic name (not advertising ftp). duply (simple duplicity) was born.
But soon further functionality found it's way into the patch and because the maintenance of the original author was sparsely the project ftplicity on sourceforge was created. The idea was to spread the word and find contributors in order to maintain and enhance ftplicity further.
About
duply is a frontend for the mighty duplicity magic. duplicity is a python based shell application that makes encrypted incremental backups to remote storages.

* executing pre/post scripts
* precondition checking for flawless duplicity operation
Since version 1.5.0 all duplicity backends are supported. Hence the name changed from ftplicity to duply.
<include src="tmp/sfnet.link" nopre noesc/> or view all files in the sourceforge files section.

About
duply is a frontend for the mighty duplicity magic. duplicity is a python based shell application that makes encrypted incremental backups to remote storages.

* executing pre/post scripts

Backupninja allows you to coordinate system backup by dropping a few simple configuration files into /etc/backup.d/. Most programs you might use for making backups don't have their own configuration file format. Backupninja provides a centralized way to configure and schedule many different backup utilities.

Mailing List
Duply has no dedicated mailing list. Please use the trackers below. Nonetheless if you plan to use duply / duplicity on a regular basis or are already doing so you should consider to join duplicity's mailing list where the latest releases, occurring bugs and other topics around duplicity including duply are discussed.

Trackers
Duply has two ticket systems on sourceforge. Before mailing the maintainer you should use these. Other users might have the same problems and might find your entry or comment helpful.

Important: Please have the kindness to check if your bug or missing feature is already in the tracker by using the search function. If so, simply add your observations to the appropriate ticket. Thank you.

Bugs
Please give a short description of your issue accompanied by
# the command line that lead to the error (add -v9 for debug verbosity of duplicity in case of a python error stack)
# the complete output of your duply command
# ideally a test case that helps to reproduce the error

Important: Do not forget to obfuscate private data (passwords, usernames, hosts ...) in all data submitted.

All steps done? Well then off you go to the duply bug tracker.

Feature requests
You think duply is missing a feature? I guess you are right :), so go on and deliver a patch ;). You can find the latest development code to modify on the code page.

Not a developer? Well, sh*** happens. Why don't you try to become one. You should really try, because editing bash scripts is easier than you might think and will help you in your daily life on the command line.

In case you won't/can't deliver a patch I look forward to your suggestions. Any idea is a contribution that brings duply closer to perfection. Create a new feature request on the duply feature request tracker but please use the search function first to prevent duplicate entries.
Edsohttps://duply.net/index.php?title=Duply-help&diff=376Duply-help2020-06-21T12:18:43Z
Edso: Edso moved page Duply-help to Help

duply's svn repository is not the most recent source for the code. Usually the svn only gets updated on releases. But not always. Development snapshots are taken daily. These are not guaranteed to work, but might contain unreleased fixes. Check the snapshot's changelog header accordingly.
